Ubitricity will start converting lampposts into EV charging stations

IMG_2779

Ubitricity is a company out of Germany and their plan to convert lampposts to EV charging stations is underway. Ubitricity is currently using London lampposts that have been previously converted to LED lighting to also charge commuter EV vehicles. EV owners simply need to purchase a custom charging cable from Ubitricity that contains a meter that will track the user’s power usage and charge them appropriately. Don’t expect to just walk on up and plug anything you want into the charging port as the custom charging cable is what activates the port. No custom charging cable, no juice.

The meter that tracks your usage is also tied to billing and tracking who the outlet you’re plugged into belongs to. Of course, the whole system comes with a smartphone app that allows you to keep track of your power usage, billing, and other account information. Ubitricity believes these lampposts will give EV owners the confidence to take their vehicles on longer trips than normal. Being able to power up easily and not worry about the distance from home is a huge benefit.

It’s a brilliant idea to use the existing power sources and EV owners can even request any LED lampposts near them be converted with the technology. I’m sure there’s going to be a waiting list for that, but even with EV’s gaining longer range batteries, it’s important to have these types of conveniences to make owning an EV more appealing. Range and access to power have been two things many users question when considering an EV, if there’s enough of these around, perhaps it will quell concerns over power. Now we can only hope Ubitricity will get moving in the United States.
