Tesla could have a 600-mile range electric car by 2017

The Tesla Model S surpasses any other electric vehicle on the market with its 265-mile driving range. The automaker isn’t stopping there, though. Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk recently announced that Tesla may be able to increase that range to 600 miles as soon as 2017 and by 2020, the driving range could climb even higher to around 725 miles on a single charge.

During an interview on Danish television, Musk stated that the increased driving range could arrive within a year or two. He also revealed that Tesla’s Autopilot autonomous driving technologies are currently undergoing beta testing, but some of the technology could arrive as soon as next month. The first technology will reportedly be a new automated passing function.

The news of an even longer driving range for Tesla comes at a time when other automakers are getting close to introducing their own 200-mile electric vehicles, like the next-generation Nissan Leaf and upcoming Chevy Bolt.
