FDA Approves Laser to Battle Baldness

The Florida maker of a hand-held laser device designed to promote hair growth in balding men says it has been has been approved for sale by U.S. regulators.

Participants in a study of the device had an average increase of 19 hairs per square centimeter on their scalps, Lexington International of Boca Raton, Fla., said in a news release.

The HairMax Laser Comb is a method of treatment that can be of great help to men of all ages suffering from hair loss, said Dr. Matt Leavitt, chief medical advisor to Lexington.

Lexington said 93 percent of participants in a study for submission to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had an increase in the number of hairs on their scalps.

The HairMax Laser Comb, which the company sells for $645, should be used three times a week for 10 to 15 minutes, Lexington said.
